Introduction
A 9 km Vence walk – ‘Circuit du Malvan” starts at the western edge of town and climbs 300m to the source of the river Malvan and the ancient village of the same name.
The first ¾ hour is a study uphill climb, not dramatic but constant. From there the route opens out and follows the contour of the valley. The path crosses the Malvan river and returns back to Vence along the opposite hillside. The only disappointing part is the final descent. It is all road walking albeit 85% on very quiet roads.
Château Notre-Dames-des-Fleurs and the ascent
Drive out of Vence on the route to Tourette (or take the bus) and just after the large Salle Jaques Faloz roundabout take the first right. Park anywhere along this road because the tour starts and finishes on this hill.
There are a few scattered very large houses in this area which all have magnificent vistas down to the sea. One of these mansions had some very strange sculptures in the garden.
The route changes as you leave the houses behind and climb. As the path climbs you enter an oak wood with the sunlight pouring through the trees.
After roughly 45 minutes of steady climbing the view opens out and the valley of the Malvan is ahead of you.
Shortly after this point the ruins of the Chapelle St Raphael sits to your left. Continue along the westerly side of the valley and then cross the Malvan close to it’s source.
The turn back to Vence
It’s from this point that the path turns back towards Vence. Along the way enjoy beautiful views ahead.
Here it is pleasant easy walking, but with great views
When the path starts to descend it quickly becomes an asphalt road. Admittedly a very quiet road that soon descends steeply.
You know that you are in an expensive area when the houses have entrances like the one below.
And you can understand why people pay top dollar for homes here. The views are wonderful.
If you are following the route on the map don’t take the diversion we took. Turn right at signpost 110 and follow the Chemin de l’Ormée. This route keeps to the contours of the hill and provides the home owners great scenes to wake up to each morning.
Here was another garden full of statues
A km down the road there is a left turn, Chemin Des Quatre Vents, this road descends steeply and brings you down to the old route de Vence. It’s bit of a slog along this road. You cross the Malvan again. It’s a bit bigger here.
A further km on and you arrive at the roundabout of Jacques Faloz and you are virtually home.
Conclusion
The Vence walk Circuit du Malvan is part of the Alpes-Maritimes Randoxygène program. Most local tourist information offices can provide a set of books for different areas within Alpes-Maritimes.
