The first part of the walk takes you up 380ft for a great view of the city below. The above view was captured in early evening with the sunsetting in the distance.

It’s then up again on the longest climb of the trail, 830ft. However the views are worth it. The Santa Monica Mountains provide a place of nature so close to one of the world’s iconic homes to materialism. It is such a contrast up here to the rat race below.

It’s time to think about life

The mist covering the mountains is quite spectacular. It’s not city smog that covers the Topanga National Park, but the early morning mist. What a great place for a picnic or just to gather your thoughts. It’s time to forget life’s daily problems and admire nature’s power and beauty.

The rustic garapito loop trail is named after the Spanish word for Tick insect. This path was trodden in February and there were no signs of tick bites at the end.

The whole journey with stops for rest and a picnic took just over five hours. However, the walking time was only three hours 49 minutes. You have, therefore, to look at this trail as a whole day out. If you value outdoor exercise in a magnificent setting then it’s definitely worth it.
